Summary
The first known outbreak of Sudan ebolavirus occurred in 1976 in Nzara, a cotton-factory town in southern Sudan (now South Sudan), and spread to Maridi via a hospital. 284 cases and 151 deaths were recorded (CFR 53%). The index case was a cotton-factory worker and amplification was largely nosocomial in Maridi Hospital.
Why this matters
Co-discovery event with the Yambuku outbreak; established Sudan virus as a distinct species.
