Summary
Cynomolgus macaques imported from the Philippines to a quarantine facility in Reston, Virginia, were found to be dying from a haemorrhagic illness later identified as a new ebolavirus species. Four animal-care workers seroconverted but none developed clinical illness, establishing Reston ebolavirus as non-pathogenic to humans.
Why this matters
First detection of an ebolavirus outside Africa; established Reston as a distinct, human-asymptomatic species.
