Summary
The second-largest pre-2014 Ebola outbreak occurred in and around Kikwit General Hospital in southwestern Zaire (DRC). 315 cases and 254 deaths were recorded (CFR 81%). The outbreak began undetected in late 1994 in surrounding villages, accelerated through nosocomial transmission, and was contained after the deployment of barrier nursing and an international response coordinated by WHO and CDC.
Why this matters
Re-awakened global attention to filoviruses after a 16-year gap and established the modern outbreak-response template (case finding, barrier nursing, safe burials).
