The first Sudan ebolavirus outbreak in Uganda began in Gulu and spread to Masindi and Mbarara districts. 425 cases and 224 deaths were recorded (CFR 53%), at the time the largest Ebola outbreak ever documented. Healthcare workers including Dr Matthew Lukwiya, who led the response, were among the victims.

Why this matters

Largest single Ebola outbreak before the 2014 West Africa epidemic; reset global perception of the maximum scale of the disease.
