Summary
An outbreak of haemorrhagic fever in Bundibugyo District, western Uganda, infected 149 people and killed 37 (CFR 25%). Genetic sequencing identified a new, fourth ebolavirus species, named Bundibugyo. The lower-than-typical CFR became a defining clinical feature.
Why this matters
Discovery event for a new ebolavirus species; established Bundibugyo as clinically milder than Zaire or Sudan strains.
