Summary
The largest Ebola outbreak in history began in Meliandou, Guinea, in December 2013 and spread across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. 28,616 cases and 11,310 deaths were recorded across the three primary countries (CFR ~40%). The epidemic prompted unprecedented international response, the deployment of the experimental rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine in a ring trial in Guinea, and the eventual licensure of Ervebo in 2019. WHO declared the public-health emergency over on 9 June 2016 after the final flare-up in Liberia.
Why this matters
Largest Ebola epidemic ever; catalyst for licensed Ervebo vaccine and the modern WHO emergency-response architecture.
